At yesterday’s Simcoe County Council meeting, we unanimously approved the immediate upgrades to the security systems at the Simcoe County Housing RGI complex (rent geared to income) at 559 King Street in Midland. This building was the scene of a shooting that left an 18yr old Toronto youth dead and a suspect at large. The day after the event, the security guard service that was for daytime was extended to 24/7 for a month and plans to move ahead with security upgrades to the building’s security systems came to council for early approval before the 2027 budget.
The funds were already set to be included in the 2027 budget so we approved moving them to this fall and getting the work done ASAP.
Upgrades will include, among other things, a complete overhaul of the building’s access controls to move from traditional keys to electronic key-fobs, upgraded cameras, surveillance and alarms for people improperly using fire exits as ways to get in and out of the building without detection.
These upgrades are planned for all aging Simcoe County housing buildings and being done in phases. The recent incident at the building has brought this forward now to address the resident safety concerns.
I was proud to support this intiative and advance the upgrades to this fall instead of sometime next year.
