An Innovation Hub For North Simcoe In 2024?

Listen to this article

In the 2023 budget cycle last January, and after seeing no measurable outcomes from the Economic Development Corporation of North Simcoe (EDCNS), we cut their funding by 50%. Not ready to give up without some work, I joined their board to work with our other partner municipalities and the talented board members to define and craft a real value proposition for 2024 and beyond. We needed something tangible and measurable that could have a direct impact on the economic growth of our communities.

This is the “north star” for the EDCNS for 2024-2026. This partnership between Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay is proposing that we fund and launch the “Innovation Hub” to help attract, incubate, nurture and grow small business and entrepreneurship in our community. Business retention and new growth are equally important. We have amazing talent in our communities and want to focus that talent into a collaborative effort modeled after other successful hubs like the “Sandbox Centre” in Barrie. What are your thoughts? Midland’s share over the next three budget cycles is $127k and will be supplemented by $50k from the County of Simcoe in 2024 and then by Federal and Provincial sources in 2025 and 2026.
