Candidate 101: Role Of Council & Councillors

Municipal Government Responsibilties
Listen to this article

As I read through candidate profiles in MidlandToday and elsewhere this campaign season, one thing stands out to me: know the job before you campaign for it.

Some platforms promise things that simply aren’t within a councillor’s power to deliver. As members of the board of directors for the Corporation of the Town of Midland, our role is defined by the Municipal Act, and a lot of what falls outside it belongs to the County of Simcoe, the Province, or another jurisdiction entirely. Understanding those limits should be step one for every candidate, before the lawn signs go up.

I’d encourage every candidate to read the Ontario Municipal Councillors’ Guide, and at minimum, the section on the role of council, councillors, and staff: https://www.ontario.ca/…/1-role-council-councillor-and…

A councillor who makes promises they can’t keep risks more than embarrassment and wasting valuable time at meetings. It costs public trust and strains the working relationship with staff that good governance depends on.

Municipal Jurisdiction

And if you’re a voter, I’d encourage you to read it too, even if a candidate hasn’t. Knowing what the job actually is helps you ask sharper questions and have a more honest conversation with all of us on the ballot.
