Free Christmas Parking Initiative

Mindful that these motions concern parking downtown, freshly after a defeated motion to pause the system until spring, this motion relates to an activity unrelated to the malfunctions or user challenges and instead seeks support for an initiative that we’ve embraced yearly in the past and that I’m concerned may be otherwise overlooked.

“That council implement the customary free parking for the month of December to help encourage the return of shoppers to our revitalized downtown core on the most important shopping month of the year”

“That staff lead demonstrations and learning sessions on using the parking system at strategic times and locations downtown over the next few months to help with user adoption and to promote the use of the system”

Council received the following letter from our BIA (downtown business improvement association) in support of this request. It will appear in an upcoming Council Information Package published on the town’s site, but it missed the deadline to be added to our Oct 20th agenda. I intend to rely on this submission when speaking to my motion.

Dear Municipal Staff and Town Council,

The Downtown Midland BIA Board would like to formally request from Municipal Staff and Council that for the month of December, “Free Parking in Downtown Midland” be offered again this year.

Historically the offer of free parking has been extended for on street and off-street municipal lots for the month of December. This has been a great way to promote our downtown stores, advertise our shop local campaign, and this year will help encourage people to come down and see the newly reconstructed King Street in all of its planned Holiday Splendor.

Our events committee has been working extra hard this year to expand the winter vision, and has great things planned through our Christmas on King promotion. Covid restrictions have limited some new ideas, but you will see the return of the light up snowflakes, new extra colorful and bright holiday lights, new garlands adorning the street light posts, bright and bold banners, custom store front paintings, a Charitable Christmas tree market and the annual Christmas tree lighting.

If agreed to, the addition of Free Parking will be included in all of our media campaigns and should help generate another great news story on all the reasons to shop local this holiday season.

  1. Good idea.Actually should end it as stupid idea.Town makes no money as cost of machines and enforcement neutral.Machines are not user friendly anyway. My experience in Niagara is towns ended paid parking dt.
