Midland Bay Landing – Where I Stand

We can do so much better in "phase one" than concrete and condominiums. I will revisit this plan and the phasing with a new council & our community.

Just so everyone is crystal clear where I stand on Midland Bay Landing – it can be summarized as “With The Community”.

Preserving our small town charm while growing responsibly is paramount. People move here for that charm and not to replicate the urban concrete jungles they fled to come to the shores of Georgian Bay.

Bill Gordon – Aspirations for our community

I am supportive of responsible development at Midland Bay Landing however, it has been 10 years since it has received public input, bringing it out for review would allow us to ensure that it meets the needs of our present-day community.

For example, putting public use / mixed use development into phase one ahead of the residential development might be one consideration. The notion widely held by our current mayor and most of this council is that those consultations done a decade ago satisfy that requirement and there is no appetite to change course or revisit the plan despite the community-wide desire to do so following the pandemic and a renewed appreciation for public outdoor spaces.

Sept 20th 2022 Update: Read this press release from the Midland Bay Landing Development Corporation in attempt to appease some fears (largely stemming from their lack of clear communications to the community).

I need your help by electing candidates who are brave enough to pause this process and revisit the plans with the residents so that we have a clear mandate to move forward with a revised plan more reflective of our community’s desire for a premiere, four-season, accessible, public access waterfront on Georgian Bay.

If you agree, please consider supporting me as your next Mayor and send me like-minded, community-focused councillors to help build our community’s future on this land.

Those who have committed (along with me) to a pause and community re-think of the plan include:

Deputy Mayor Candidates:

Jack Contin for Deputy Mayor of Midland

Council Candidates:

Bill Meridis

Frank Vatalaro

Jamie-Lee Ball

Councillor Beth Prost (incumbent)

Rebecca Sernasie

Roberta Bald

Eric Howie Major

I will update this list as more candidates make the pledge. If your candidate(s) are not named above, ask them why they have not taken a stance on this issue yet or why they oppose revisiting this plan with you before selling the land and developing the existing plan.

Here is the contact list for each candidate: https://www.midland.ca/Shared%20Documents/Election%20Page/2022%20Election/1-Candidate%20Contact%20List%20-%202022.pdf

  1. I completely agree with you, Bill. We need to take another look while consulting the citizens in Midland.

  2. Thank you, Bill, for being one of the few Councillors who understands the importance of this natural, vital, public space to the residents and tourists of Midland. Thank you for coming down to talk to residents about it (as well did Jack Contin). Currently, Midland Bay Landing serves as a youth centre, a senior’s centre, a recreation centre, a mental health centre, a food bank (fish), a pharmacy (effects water, wind, sunsets on the nervous system), a 24-hour hotline for fellowship, a quite respite and a beloved tourist attraction. From morning to night, MBL is constantly in use – for free, rain or shine – to the residents of this town. It is unknowable the collective despair and social costs of moving forward with the current development plan. Thank you for standing for the rethink. It is imperative.
